I don't mind the idea of meta being hosted at AO3, but I do think the archive needs some kind of top level categorisation for the different kinds of fanworks, rather than relying on users tagging, because many of them don't bother if they indicate the content in some other way. I'd love to see fic, art, podfic, vids, filk, meta etc each having a filterable category, and it being a mandatory part of the upload form. That way if you're looking for something in particular you can find it easily.
I'd be very wary of any attempts to screen meta for quality but an FAQ or guide post talking about meta might be a good idea, just to give guidelines as to what meta means.

i agree that we need top level categorization of fanwork type. why don't we have that? if we had that categorization in place, i don't see why we couldn't put meta on the ao3.

Total agreement with nonniesock. I don't mind the idea of AO3 hosting podfic, meta, etc., but these things all need to be categorized in a consistent, mandatory way so people can find or avoid it easily, rather than relying on user tagging.

A big ditto to nonniesock and Velociwrangler. I already hate having to wade through fanart when I'm looking for fic. Dealing with meta, too, would be a gigantic pain. Once it's possible to easily filter out the fanworks you aren't interested in, I think it'd be fine to encourage meta.
