Exciting! I always love a good graph.
The Additional Freeform chart seems to confirm that unlimited and unrestrained extra tags have limited usefulness. People aren't using them to say new things, and haven't been in a long time. It's all either cruft, or the same old things in new ways.

The numbers kinda surprised me when I was pulling them together - the canonical percentage for Characters almost shocked me.
Here's the thing, though - as I'm sure you've seen on your own wrangling page, it's incredibly fandom-specific. I've got 20-odd fandoms I keep an eye on, ranging from Marvel Cinematic Universe to Primeval to Sanctuary to Cats (musical). The only two fandoms on my list that generate what I would even begin to call an "unmanageable" number of long-form freeforms are MCU and Inception. (You can probably name the two or three other fandoms that're are responsible for a LOT of them.) I'm seeing them creep into a couple other fandoms, but maybe at the rate of one or two a week. So I don't know. Those specific fandoms seem to find them valid.

this comment archiveofourown.org/comments/1576034 talks about misspelt tags and possible errors. And while I get the desire to let writers tag however they want, i wonder if there could be a compromise. Someone tagging a fic Toni Stark may be doing so deliberately to indicate an "always a girl" fic but to use the example from the comment Jhon Sheppard is probably a typo that the writer would fix if they knew about it. if typos like that generated an email along the lines of Hi, we noticed you tagged your SGA fic with Jhon sheppard, and it looks like it may be a typo. If it isn't feel free to ignore this email, but we thought you might like a heads up in case it was an errorHow would wranglers feel about being able to send an email like that? Would it make your job easier or harder? And from a user point of view would anyone mind getting a message like that? I know I'd appreciate it, but then i constantly make typos that I fail to spot no matter how many times I check.

How would wranglers feel about being able to send an email like that? Would it make your job easier or harder? Can't speak for anyone else, but I would cry with delight. Especially since so many typos render the tags unsearchable in ways wranglers can't fix. There's no way to make a character tag like " John Sheppard Rodney McKay" attached to both characters. All we can do is quietly pray the author looks at the fic again later and notices.

Would it make your job easier or harder? Harder, possibly. Especially given the sheer size of Marvel fandom. As a side note, I've seen someone use "Jhon Sheppard" on purpose (off-Archive) for a non-human-John AU. Something about the ears or something. /shrug.
