@an0n: amen! But getting media subcategories requires getting the Coders to change the top-level tag structure, as the Media Category type doesn't have displayed options for metatags or subtags. The K-Drama and J-Drama tags that were mentioned in the meme are Fandom metatags. So, as a theme that we'll keep returning to I'm sure, I suspect Wrangling could be convinced...once we get the code. Re: fandom meta tags: those really don't fill the same need as subcategories. Clicking a meta tag takes you to a list of the fics tagged under that meta tag. A subcategory would let you filter down to see a list of the relevant fandoms. Paging through all the works in a sports rpf fandom meta tag at 20 works to a page, hoping to spot something that strikes my fancy would even worse than the current set up, imo. Exactement. In theory, filters will mitigate some of that problem. (Ask me how I feel about filters some time in an untracked media source.) But they really don't work for the casual browser who wants to browse through a list. Let CatChange know, let Support know (though they'll just be forwarding to CatChange anyway).

Yes, I also had read where subcategories were a technical problem and disfavored for that reason --- although in the board chat members of the Cat Change workgroup didn't seem to hold that view; probably they're at a really preliminary stage, but it might be that it's negotiable...
To import a point from the meta thread, though, categories for type of fanwork were discussed (ie, podfic, vids, art, meta --- many of which Ao3 has a stated goal of being more open to), and that just wouldn't work without subcategories, either. Ie, it looks like inability to do subcategories is going to bite one way or another, given the breadth of the mission.

Agreed, and that's something they're aware of - they'd have to make a "Work_media" tag type and all the code for it, so...

Also speaking unofficially (I'm the AD&T committee chair and one of the workgroup members), there really are no technical limitations. We've been tossing out ideas for everything from minor revamps to completely new systems for over a year now; I've built working prototypes that I sometimes fling at unsuspecting passers-by in chat! It's really just that it's such a big cross-committee project, and we want to make sure that we get everybody's feedback and that all the different committees are on board.
(The front page is also not set in stone! There are minor improvements coming in the short term, and designs in progress for more significant changes.)
